Registration for the 2018 season is now open for both In-Town and Travel programs.

Andover Junior Football is ready to kickoff it’s 2018 season

Are you ready for some football?  The AJFL sure is!

As spring begins, the snow finally disappears and the grass starts to turn green it can only mean one thing – Youth Football in Andover is about to embark on another fantastic season and its time to think about registering your players and cheerleaders for the AJFL. This time of year always provides me an opportunity as the AJFL President to provide everyone with an update on upcoming AJFL events along with the overall health of the country’s oldest consecutive running in-town league in the country.

To start, I want to address a number of unsubstantiated rumors and fake news reports of the imminent demise of our in-town league.  Simply put – it is NOT TRUE.  I am here to assure everyone that nothing is further from the truth and the reality is that our 2018 registration is already ahead of previous seasons.  As AJFL President I can assure everyone there will be youth football in Andover this year and for years to come. Frankly, we can’t wait for the 2018 season to begin!

While it is true that in recent years the league has had to adapt to a number of challenges faced by many youth football leagues throughout the country, I am happy to say that to date we have been up to the challenge. With support from the town,  our wonderful family’s and the exhaustive hours and efforts put in by our dedicated volunteers, the AJFL continues to remain a vibrant football league dedicated to promoting the spirit of competition, enhance the physical and moral training of our players while teaching good sportsmanship.

As we prepare to embark on the upcoming 2018 season I am happy to report your Board is actively reviewing our current challenges we expect to face this year while exploring any and all options needed to meet them and ensure every participant enjoys another fantastic season. So what does that mean?  As in previous seasons we are reviewing everything from field accessibility to ensuring we provide high quality equipment for our players. We are monitoring our financial health, evaluating ways to cut costs while increasing revenues while still being the least expensive organized athletic league to participate in Andover.

In order to continue to maintain good stewardship, we actively review what other leagues are doing nationally in an effort to continue to improve our own league. Several ideas under consideration every year include expanding our middle school travel team program and possibly including a travel program that includes teams representing other ages/grades.  Most of all we are always evaluating what we can do to improve our own in-town game league - whether it includes possibly implementing placing age, grade and weight restrictions, or possible rule changes specifically designed to appeal to younger players and their families - all with the intent to ensure Andover continues to provide a viable opportunity to teach the basics of proper contact football techniques, good sportsmanship and teamwork while having a lot of fun.  One exciting announcement already this year will be the expansion to our cheer program, which will include a number of additional competitions!

Like everything in life, change is inevitable. Yet your AJFL Board is actively working to ensure youth football is not only here today but will be here for a long time to come.  We always welcome new ideas, hearing from families – new or old to the AJFL – and are here to answer any concerns you may have.  In addition we always welcome and encourage volunteers!

So how can you help?  Spread the word  - registration is now open and right now we offer an early-bird special. Two benefits resulting from early registration are it enables the league to create teams and more likely place players on the teams they want while lowering the cost for families to participate. Should anyone have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to me directly .  We are looking forward to kicking off the 2018 Youth Football Season!
